What is the Folk Reservoir?

After falling in love with shows like Bright Star and Once: the Musical, I realized that there was no centralized resource for discussion and research on the style of "Folk Musical Theatre". I created this as a resource to theatre artists seeking information and education about the Folk/Country Musical Theatre Genre. This is an expanding subgroup within Musical Theatre, with recent successes such as Hadestown and golden oldies like Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Whether you call this "folk" or "country" or whatever else you may call it, there is beauty in its simplicity, rich harmonies, and raw emotion (Making it the perfect carrier of a musical theatre show!). We look to discuss and analyze hard-hitting questions, history, and technique to hopefully help current theatre artists do the style the justice it deserves!

Hello! I am

Mitchell Holsclaw

Hello! My name is Mitchell and I grew up in the piedmont area of North Carolina. For a long time, I listened to Allison Krauss and the "O Brother, Where art thou?" soundtrack at my family's tiny mountain cabin built by my great uncle Percy. I never cared much for Country music growing up, but learned that was due to "Country Pop", and that it was only one of many genres that had split off and grown from "Mountain Music", what my Grandma played with her 9 siblings way back when. This music is about culture, it's about family, and it is the stories and emotions of the common people. From the Appalachian Mountains to Bakersfield California, this music, when done right, was never intended to make money. It was for the love of what was being played.
